Perhaps the most powerful ecosystem in the artisanal world is the craft fair. Not so long ago, as Susan Beal notes, people gathered at local church bazaars. From those modest beginnings, any event can attract hundreds of vendors and thousands of attendees.61 The Bazaar Bizarre started in Boston in 2001. The first Renegade Craft Fair started in Chicago in 2003. Stitch Austin was founded in 2003. Faythe Levine started the Art vs. Craft fair in Milwaukee in 2004.

The Renegade Craft Fair was organized by Sue Blatt and Kathleen Habbley, who, in the fearless spirit of DIY, noticed that there wasn’t yet a national fair for the new crafting scene.”62 Christy Petterson met with Shannon Mulkey and Susan Voelker to consider what they could do in Atlanta. They came up with the name Indie Craft Experience and a mission: “a summertime event that would include a craft market, fashion show, live music, charity raffle, art show and a guaranteed good time.”63

These events are hothouses for the artisanal movement. Each one demonstrates a new set of possibilities. The displays instantaneously inspire attendees, who return the following year with creative proposals of their own. And there is a relentless recruitment going on. People come one year as observers, the next year as consumers, and the year after that as artisans. All of this creativity and community begins to generate more and more proceeds. Thus does this ecosystem help supply the precious profits on which the larger ecosystem eventually depends.
